A Real Electrician on the Other End of the Line

When the power goes out at 2 a.m. or your standby generator fails during the worst storm of the year, you don't have time to wait on hold or get a vague answer from a national call center. Banner Electric has been answering emergency calls across North Central Indiana for over sixty years. When you dial (574) 936-9715, you reach a real dispatcher who knows our electricians by name, knows your service area, and gets a licensed technician moving toward your home.

We provide 24/7 emergency response for residential electrical emergencies and any issue involving a standby generator — Kohler, Cummins, Briggs & Stratton, or any brand we service. For non-emergency commercial and industrial scheduled work, our normal business hours apply (Monday–Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.). If you're a commercial customer with a true after-hours emergency involving safety, life, or downtime risk, call the emergency line and we'll triage from there.

What Counts as an Electrical Emergency

If any of these are happening in your home or with your generator right now, stop reading and call us. Some of these are life-safety issues.

Total Power Loss

No power anywhere in the home and your neighbors still have lights on. Could be a service line, mast, or main panel issue.

Generator Won't Start

Grid is down and your standby generator failed to transfer or is alarming. We service all major brands at any hour.

Sparking or Smoking Outlet

Visible sparks, scorch marks, melting plastic, or a burning smell from a switch or outlet. Shut off the breaker and call.

Breakers That Won't Reset

A breaker trips immediately every time you flip it back on. Could indicate a short circuit, ground fault, or failing panel.

Storm Damage to Service

Service line pulled away from the house, meter ripped off, or weatherhead/mast damaged by wind or ice. Hot wires are deadly — stay clear.

Flooded Electrical Equipment

Water in your panel, outlets, or near electrical equipment. Do not touch anything. We'll safely isolate and assess.

Sump Pump Down in a Storm

Lost power and basement is flooding. We can restore power, install a backup circuit, or get a generator inline fast.

Medical Devices Affected

Power loss putting oxygen, CPAP, dialysis, or other life-essential equipment at risk. Tell our dispatcher — we prioritize.

What To Do Before We Arrive

Do This First

  • If you smell smoke or see fire — leave the home immediately and call 911 first, then us.
  • If anyone is touching live electrical — do not touch them. Cut power at the main breaker if you can safely reach it, then call 911.
  • For sparking, smoking, or burning outlets — if it's safe to reach, flip off the breaker feeding that circuit. Do not pour water on electrical fires.
  • For flooded electrical — stay clear of water. Do not flip breakers in a wet panel. Wait for us to safely isolate.
  • For downed service lines outside — stay back at least 35 feet. Call 911 and your utility (NIPSCO, AEP, or Marshall County REMC) first, then us.
  • For generator emergencies — do not operate a generator indoors or in a garage. If it's running but not transferring, leave it and call us — do not attempt to manually transfer at the panel.

Standby Generator Down? We're On It.

If your standby generator failed to start, won't transfer, is alarming, or is running but not powering the house, call us at (574) 936-9715 — even if we didn't install it. We service all the major residential and commercial brands and carry common replacement parts on the trucks. Most generator emergencies fall into one of these buckets: battery dead, low oil/coolant fault, controller error, automatic transfer switch failure, or fuel-side issue (low gas line pressure, propane tank empty, fuel solenoid). We'll diagnose, fix what we can on the spot, and give you a clear written quote for anything bigger.

If you don't have a generator yet and this outage is making you wish you did, we install residential standby generators from Kohler, Cummins, and Briggs & Stratton, plus commercial and industrial units. Pairing one with a home battery system is our recommended setup for full storm protection.

Emergency Service FAQ

How fast can you get to me?

Response time depends on your distance from Plymouth and current call volume. Most emergency calls within 40 miles receive a tech on-site within 60–120 minutes. We triage by severity — life-safety and medical-equipment situations move to the front of the line.

Do you charge extra for after-hours emergency calls?

Yes — there is an after-hours service rate for nights, weekends, and holidays that covers the on-call electrician and stocked truck. We'll quote the trip charge over the phone before we dispatch so you know exactly what to expect, with no surprises on the invoice.

What if I'm just not sure whether it's really an emergency?

Call anyway. The dispatcher will walk through a few questions and help you decide. If it can safely wait until normal business hours, we'll schedule you for the next available slot and you'll skip the after-hours fee. We'd rather you ask than guess wrong.

Can I text or chat instead of calling?

For true emergencies, please call. The phone is the fastest path to a real dispatcher. For non-urgent questions, Alex (our chat assistant in the corner of every page) and our contact form are both great.

Do you service generators you didn't install?

Yes. We service all major brands of standby generators regardless of who installed them — Kohler, Cummins, Briggs & Stratton, Generac, Champion, and others. If we can't get a part on the spot, we'll stabilize what we can and order what's needed.

What if my emergency is commercial?

Our standard commercial and industrial service runs Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. For a true commercial after-hours emergency involving safety or major operational downtime, call the emergency line and we'll triage and dispatch as needed. For scheduled commercial work, please use the contact form.

What payment do you accept for emergency calls?

We accept all major credit cards, checks, and ACH. Payment is due at the end of the visit unless other arrangements are made in advance. Existing commercial accounts can be invoiced on standard terms.

Non-Emergency? Send Us a Message.

If it's urgent, call (574) 936-9715. Otherwise, tell us what's going on and we'll respond within one business day.
